30 YEARS - 100,000 NAUTICAL MILES – More than 500 PROJECTS  and 10.000 BROADCAST MINUTES in Radio and TV from board the research and broadcast vessel ALDEBARAN is the remarkable result since 1992. The floating research laboratory sailing in shallow waters – where the humans are connected to the ocean - with a high-tech broadcast studio reached out to millions with a minimum of CO2 emission. The list of the milestones of the great history of ALDEBARAN is nearly endless:

  • January 1992 - First radio broadcast 
  • June 1992 - First scientific expedition 
  • June 1992 - First radio show live from baltic sea – first more than 100 Ministers visit ALDEBARAN 
  • July 1992 - First scientific monitoring of baltic sea coastline in Germany 
  • August 1992 - First ocean radio campaign for north Germany
  • September 1992 - First TV documentary for national TV ZDF
  • August 1993 - First baltic sea seagrass project 
  • August 1993 - First research project in Lithuania
  • October 1993 – presentation of ALDEBARAN in front of German parliament in Bonn
  • January 1994 - Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Hans Hass visiting the boast
  • June 1994 - First German boat with email access
  • March 1994 – start of a strategic cooperation with Microsoft
  • July-August 1996 - Germanys largest ocean media campaign ever
  • December 1996 - Elisabeth Mann Borgese supports the concept
  • December 1996 - Whale research project Canary Islands
  • June 1998 – First of 3 German presidents (Roman Herzog) visits the boat
  • June 1998 - First digital TV editing suite established
  • June 1999 - First online streaming for Kiel week
  • July 2005 - Kick of German youth ocean contest 
  • November 2006 - First underwater webcam in Egypt
  • January 2007 - First of three reef expedition to Belize on corals and climate change
  • August 2007 - Campaign oceans for global Live Earth concert in Hamburg
  • September 2007 - First Fulldome production for planetarium
  • September 2007 - First of 3 awards within the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development
  • December 2008 - Supporting the international year of reefs
  • September 2009 - First global climate week in Hamburg
  • December 2009 - Live broadcast from coral reef to COP in Kopenhagen
  • June 2011 - Start of Series of 4 Ocean Conferences
  • January 2014 – organizing EU-Ocean and fisheries commission event with Olaf Scholz in Hamburg
  • June 2014 – supporting European Maritime Day in Bremen
  • June 2014 – national campaign for biodiversity
  • October 2015 - Founding of "Deutsche Meeresstiftung" German Ocean Foundation
  • October 2015 - RENEW tour from Berlin to Climate Summit in Paris
  • November 2015 - Joining ocean and climate platform
  • January 2017 - "Love Your Ocean" initiative at boot show in Düsseldorf and Ocean Symposium
  • November 2017 - Events for COP in Bonn
  • May 2018 - Elisabeth Mann Borgese 100th birthday
  • June 2018 - European Culture Award TAURUS

As a logical consequence of this work in 2005 the German Ocean Foundation was founded acting as a national and international dialogue platform for sustainable development and the protection of our oceans.
